Watch the world · BACKROUTE
What is publicly reported, and where.
BACKROUTE draws surveillance equipment from three kinds of source: records that councils and transport authorities publish under open licences, reports that people make on OpenStreetMap, and cameras that visitors report to us. Each point keeps its source, its licence and its date, so you can see where it came from.
The published records
- Published records
- 7,298
- Publishers
- 20
- Snapshot taken
- 27 October 2026
Placed on the map from open datasets, each with its own credit.
Councils, transport authorities and public bodies that publish the records above.
The publishers' records are read again when the snapshot is refreshed, not on each visit.
Three kinds of record
Each kind is labelled on the map, and each carries its own caveat.
Published by a council or authority
Location as published by the source. The publisher may have changed or removed it since, and operation is not verified.
Reported on OpenStreetMap
Reported location. Type, operator and operation status are not independently verified.
Reported by a visitor
Reported by a visitor and checked before it was shown. The location is not verified, and nothing says the camera is working.

Read it carefully
What the layer does not show.
This layer shows publicly reported surveillance infrastructure. It is not a complete or real-time inventory.
- A published location can have changed or been removed since it was published.
- Nothing here says a camera is switched on, is recording, or can see any particular place.
- Nothing here is a live feed, a number-plate read, a face match, or a route that avoids equipment.
- No publicly reported features returned for this view. This does not indicate an absence of surveillance.
